Armadillos take 2007 Championship

     The Armadillos from Thunder Bay defeated Superior's Need a Fifth 16-14 in the championship game of the 2007 Great Lakes Classic Pond Hockey Tournament Sunday afternoon at Barker's Island.
     Members of the winning team are Jeremy Enders, Jamie Dowson, Ryan Johnson and Ryan Sustawenko.
     The Armadillos have competed in all three Superior pond hockey tournaments, losing in the semifinals last year. Two years ago, they came to Superior with just three players and failed to advance out of pool play.
     Members of Need a Fifth, which won the inaugural tournament two years ago, are Tim Nelson, Chad and Jay Matushak and Kelly Stephens. Nelson and Chad Matushak live in Superior, Jay Matushak is living in Twin Cities area, and Stephens is from Colaraine, Minn.
     After winning its pool, the Armadillos advanced to the championship game with wins of 17-6 over Young Gunz (Superior), and 14-13 over Wells Fargo Home Mortgage (Duluth).
     Need a 5th also won its pool, then defeated Lord Stanley's (Superior) 18-10 and Hydro Solutions (Duluth) 20-15.
     Also advancing to the championship bracket were Lake Superior College No. 1 (Duluth) and the Gopher Rejects, last year champion. The Gopher Rejects consist of former University of Minnesota students, including former Superior Spartan Justin Johnson.
     Superior's MHL (Monday Hockey League) Fab Four won the inaugural Senior Division championship Sunday with a 22-8 win over the Oakville Dirty Dawgs "A" of Toronto, Ontario.
     Members of winning MHL squad are Rick Eisenmann, Ken Mertz, Gary Kucharyski, Steve Sorenson and Mike Susens. Playing for the Dirty Dawgs was Superior's Mike (Auggie) Johnson.
