Squirts score goal for needy

When Brianne Nelson and her family decided to coordinate an effort to collect food and warm winters clothes for those in need, the Superior Squirt B White hockey team was ready to lend a hand.

Team members Allen Flyen, Gunner Gronski, Michael Johansen, Tyler Keup, DJ Martin, Brandon Mattson, Derrick Mattson, Kain Medeiros, Zak Nelson, Christian Pettit, Jesse Stein and Kaleb Ullan helped in the effort to collect 11 bags of groceries and several large bags of jackets, hats, mittens and other warm apparel that was donated to Northwest Community Services Agency on Wednesday.

“I think it’s great that these kids are looking out for their community and that these families all stepped up to help,” said Josh Pettit, who coaches the team with Jarod Lowney, Evan Nelson and David Dalbec. “This time of year is pretty chaotic, especially for these little hockey players as they are on the run most of the season with practices, games throughout the area and tournaments on weekends. It’s refreshing to see that they are looking out for others in the community, and looking to make someone else’s holiday season a little better.”

Moss wins chance to practice with Bruins' Phil Kessel

Practice of a Lifetime’ with Boston Bruin is Aug. 15 in Duluth

By: Ken Olson, Superior Telegram

Play It Again Sports and Bauer Hockey announced Superior High School’s Kyler Moss is the winner of the inaugural “Practice of a Lifetime” Sweepstakes.

The 15-year-old forward scored the opportunity to share the ice with Phil Kessel of the Boston Bruins in an upcoming practice from 8 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug 15 at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center in Duluth.

Moss and Kessel will be joined on the ice with 20 of Moss’ teammates from the Superior Bantam B Spartans and Superior Mariners midget team.

“I entered the contest because I figured it was worth a shot, and Phil Kessel is a hockey player I’ve looked up to for a couple years,” Moss said. “I’m really excited to host a hockey practice with him and my teammates. I can’t wait to learn some tips and tricks that he has to share.”

Moss frequents the Play It Again Sports stores in Superior and Duluth, and filled out a sweepstakes form while shopping for hockey gear. He never thought that he’d be the lucky teen to win the sweepstakes.

“My teammates are very thankful that I entered the contest, and are looking forward to this hockey practice just as much as I am,” Moss said.

Kessel, a Madison native and forward for the Bruins, is the USA Hockey National and Development Team’s all-time leader in goals and points. In his NHL rookie year, he was awarded the 2007 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, an annual recognition for the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

“I look forward to hosting practice with Kyler,” Kessel said in a release. “I was in his skates once and now I’m playing in the NHL. I’m in a fortunate position to be a positive influence on aspiring teenagers. I look forward to encouraging the teens in Superior to stick with their dream and never give up.”

The event is open to the public and the first 1,000 people to pick up free tickets at Play It Again Sports locations in Superior and Duluth will have the opportunity to watch the practice and take part in a drawing, with prizes provided by Bauer Hockey.

“Kyler is such a great kid,” said Chris Stenberg, owner of the Play It Again Sports in Superior where Moss entered the sweepstakes. “It’s great to know that one of our customers won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I hope that Kyler enjoys his time on the ice with Phil Kessel.”

MOSS MEMOS: Kyler is the son of Superior’s Mike and Carol Moss. … Before playing for the Bruins, Kessel played for the Minnesota Gophers. … Bauer will also be offering demonstrations on their products at the event, including on Supreme ONE95 sticks and Vapor X:60 skates. … Play It Again Sports in Superior is located at 126 Belknap Street and the Duluth location is at 11256 Arrowhead Drive. … For more information about Play It Again Sports, visit www.playitagainsports.com.

Superior Bantam selected for USA Hockey Select Player Development Camp

Usa_large

Each summer USA Hockey conducts Select Player Development Camps for young athletes from throughout the country. The athletes are chosen from tryouts conducted within USA Hockey Districts, with some slots reserved for at-large selections. The goal is to attract the best players, in their specific age group, to our national program.

The purpose of the Camps is to identify, train, educate and evaluate our best athletes. Individuals are selected by Districts to attend the week-long event. During this week, our players are evaluated by our national scouting program, college and junior recruiters and professional scouts. The competition gives each player the opportunity to measure themselves against others his/her age, gain knowledge about his/her development and to be exposed to outstanding coaching.

Congratulations to Superior's Caleb Dushkin!  Dushkin went on to train and compete in Rochester, NY along with 216 other nationally selected players.
